Copy editing
This is about the words: usage, grammar, style, consistency, sentence structure and flow. There’s some overlap with proofing, but copy editing is for before text is sent to a designer or laid out, and is more in-depth as far as how something is written.
Content/Developmental Editing
Sometimes a piece of writing, particularly in its early stages, needs a 60,000-foot view for it to fall into shape. I look at structure, form, content… all the big “moving parts.” Because they likely need to be moved around.
Proofreading
The last line of defense before your work is presented to the world. Typically, all the design, layout, and pagination is done. This is to catch any errors (especially those that might have been inserted in previous stages), make sure the table of contents matches, and in general, make sure there are no mistakes left.
